Ever since I was a kid—probably around ten years old—I was always looking for ways to save a little from my allowance or make some money on the side. For example, I used to sell snacks to my classmates to earn a bit extra. That way, I could buy that comic book I wanted or that new video game without my parents having a say.
It wasn’t that they often said “no,” but just knowing I had my own money and could make my own choices gave me a strong drive to find new ways to make money. And here I am at 42, and honestly, not much has changed.
I never really fit well with a steady job; I’ve mostly done freelance work and started my own businesses. No matter my personal views about money, one thing is clear: in today’s world, the ultimate goal is financial freedom. Maybe even more than any other type of freedom.
I think our generation has already realized that the world is too big to feel stuck in one job, one city, or even one country. If we can take control of our finances, we own our time, and we get to decide what to do with it.
Many of my friends from around the world dream about moving to Asia, Europe, the U.S., Australia, or anywhere they can explore a new world. It doesn’t matter if you’re married or single; if you have a family, maybe you’d like your kids to learn a new language and culture, and if you’re single, you’re probably up for the big adventures that make you feel like you’re truly living life to the fullest.
Right now, entrepreneurship is booming; everyone’s getting into something—whether it’s selling a product, starting a business, freelancing, or at the very least, they’re thinking about it and getting ready for the right moment.
But for our parents’ and grandparents’ generation, these dreams of traveling far and starting something on their own, or even breaking free from the stability of a steady job, were almost just fantasies. They mostly focused on having a stable job, a family, a house, and saving for retirement, hoping for a slightly better life each year.
But times have changed. The housing crisis, the internet, social media, high unemployment rates worldwide—they’ve all taught us that those old values of a “perfect life” just don’t apply anymore. We have new doors open, new ways of seeing our futures.
The good news is you don’t have to be the next Mark Zuckerberg to live independently. You don’t need a degree from a prestigious school to join some “elite group” because here, there are no gates, and trust me—I know, I’ve been down this path myself. Business and the financial markets are a way to gain that independence.
